I have shared about the Greenwood News, its reporters from the early 1900s right up through the 1960s. With a couple of gaps which I hope to fill. The happenings of Greenwood during the 1950s is coming soon. A sneak peek at 1955...

The news of the citizens of Greenwood has bounced around over the years. in the late 1800s, Greenwood had a column in the Whitesville News. In the 1900s into 1911 at least, it was included in the Canisteo paper. Looks like it hopped to Hornell/Hornellsville for the 1920s. Back to Canisteo in the 1940s, Whitesville again in the 1950s and to Andover for the 1960s and 1970s. What happened to the 1930s? Members of the Historical Society are on the trail.

In general what passed for news in a small town was the comings and goings of the citizens. The details around birthday parties, wedding and baby showers as well as weddings themselves were shared.

For example, in the September 5th of 1957 edition, we were given the news that Duane Chaffee was given a birthday party with 12 boys. Mrs Lloyd Chaffee was assisted by Sally Lippert. And, Linda Murphy's (Logue) mom, Mrs James Murphy entertained a group of boys and girls to celebrate her birthday. If you attended either of these parties, chime in on Facebook and tell us all about it.

And, a wedding was announced in the September 25th edition. Miss Sarajean Lippert married Richard Ewell at the Methodist Church. Miss Suzanne Lippert was her Maid of Honor and Clair Cornell was the Best Man. Lots of details about the dresses and flowers as well as the reception at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs William Lippert.

News of the school was prominent as well. New teachers announced by Gordon Pease, President of the School Board were Mrs George Reil for the 3rd grade and Mrs Muriel Pratt Kelly for Art. Elections of officers for the faculty organization with Vice Principal Robert Hoagland as President, Clement Alderfer, VP, Jeanette Nida, Secretary and Jennie White as Treasurer. Committee Chairs appointed were: Maxine Younglove for Public Relations, Anna White for budget and of course June Rollins for entertainment.

Let's not forgot about all the organizations in town like the Eastern Star. In the September 19th edition, we found out about their Bazaar at the Masonic Hall with baked goods, canned goods, candy, fancywork, aprons, plants and novelties. There were three cake walks, and a fishing pond for the children.

I have experienced a cake walk and fishing pond; but, just have to know what fancywork entailed at this time and what about the novelties. If you were a member of the Eastern Star at this time, please enlighten me.

This is all to say that small town news was personal news and we love it. I can't wait to tell you what else happened in Greenwood in the 1950s over the next few days.
