1911 Greenwood

Along with long lists of visits and visitors, and a little entertainment, it seems a lot of the news involved elections of all kinds.

Let's start with some entertainment. The Aylesworth Sisters, vocalists and musicians presented a program at the Opera House. "They are greeted with applause wherever heard." Who knows anything about these sisters? Were they local? I found a set of 4 sisters from Canada; but, no mention of musical talent.

Also at the Opera House, an entertainment course by Empire Lyceum Bureau of Syracuse, "a higher plane than is usually seen in a town of this size, the prices are remarkedly low." The program was from an educational viewpoint with 140+ season tickets sold. "It is not a money making scheme." Why do you think they had to add that last comment? Or was scheme just the wrong word to use? Maybe they meant they hoped to break even. Let's go with that.

The Stephens family held a reunion at the Opera House. Seventy attended and elections were held to plan next year's event: President - HA York, VP - AL Trowbridge, Sec - George Stephens, Treas - George York and the dinner committee - Rose York, Elsie York and Mary Young.

The Political Equality Club met at Mrs Frank York's home. Based on the election for the reunion, I can see why these ladies would meet.

A new pastor was introduced at the Methodist Church, MH Horton. Rev JH Cheeseman spoke and Mildred Potter and Burr Williamson played music.

How about a breakdown of political parties in town around this time...

At the Town Meeting, they held elections and voted on licenses to sell liquor with the following:

Saloon License - on premise

Storekeeper License - off premise

Druggist License - by prescription

And, if the Saloon License did not pass, Hotel License

I found all the lead up to this meeting; but no information about the results. Who knows who was elected and what business was passed. Please share! I am on the edge of my seat.

The school board voted that $25 be spent for Library and Laboratory to be matched by the state. And, to buy a new flag. Truancy officer, AL Trowbridge, reported no delinquencies.

After a smallpox scare in West Union, the quarantine was lifted.

Small town USA at its finest, yes?
