Christmas 1966

Updated: May 16, 2023

I have now traveled to 1966 when we found out How the Grinch Stole Christmas for the first time.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! is a children's story by Theodor Geisel, better know as Dr Seuss, written in rhyme, of course, with illustrations by the author. It follows the Grinch, a grumpy, solitary creature who attempts to put an end to Christmas by stealing Christmas-themed items from the homes of the nearby town Whoville on Christmas Eve. The story was published as a book in 1957, and at approximately the same time in an issue of Redbook. The book was adapted as a 1966 animated TV film narrated by Boris Karloff.

Cindi Lou Who was my favorite character. With those big blue eyes of wonder and toddling around it that pink nightgown. How about you?

And, in Greenwood...

Scout Troop 62 had their party at the Methodist Church. Along with gifts, many badges and service stars were awarded.

John Murray, Assistant Scout Master here. We also sold trees in the lot next to Kernan's store. Did you get your tree from us?

The Cub Scouts party was hosted by Den Mothers Mary Mullin and Louise Nye at the school.

The Methodist Church's Christmas event included a Nativity Scene with Penny Bang's nursery class while Geraldine Lamphier recited the story of the first Christmas. June Rollins accompanied a brass ensemble of eight juniors from the church. The primary class with the help of Evelyn Hoagland was in charge of the tree. Songs were sung by many in the Junior and High School classes.

Janet Lamphier Jackson here. Jeanne Cornell Fisher and I hosted a party for the juniors while Geraldine Lamphier hosted one for the primary department.

The WSCS packed boxes for shut-ins and service members with a program that consisted of Christmas readings by each member.

And, as always the Fireman's auxiliary hosted their annual party.

This year's operetta at the school was He Said He Was Santa. Each act had a different boy play Santa with Alan Mitchel, Randy Heckman and Mike McCormick.

The RLDS Church packed boxes for shut-ins. Jerry Burley wrote and directed a pageant of the Christmas Story.

Carolyn Bassett here. I was in charge of the children's recitations as well as the tree and gift exchange. Everything was beautiful; thanks kids!

The families of Greenwood were very busy this year. The holiday season was filled with dinners galore, college students visiting along with out of town relatives and guests.

Do you have a special memory of a dinner or visit from 1966. Please share it with us in the Facebook Comments.
