Fall 1956

Updated: May 16, 2023

While this was taken in 2019 by Perry Streeter, thanks Perry, I have a feeling that it may have looked basically the same up on Christian Hollow in 1956.

Now, back to 1956...

September brought:

Greenwood's own Walter Redmond gave a series of lectures on the planet Mars at the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. In 1956, Mr Redmond was the head of astronomy at the Corning Glass Center. Later in 1957, he became a staff astronomer at the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, NY and would return to spend his summers in Greenwood with his sister Blanche Goodno.

Another birthday celebration. "Mrs Carl Thompson gave a party in honor of the fourth birthday of her daughter, Carla. Refreshments were served to 11 guests."

A bit of news about college for some locals. Paul Sheehan, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Sheehan, registered for a pre-med course at Alfred University. Mr and Mrs Stanley Murray attend a Freshman Tea with their daughter, Ellen at Alfred Ag Tech. And, the Lippert girls were home to visit their parents, Mr and Mrs William Lippert. Suzanne from St. James Hospital's nursing program and Sarajean from Geneseo State Teachers College.

Some of the local ladies were out and about too. Mrs Nelson Taylor, Mrs Blanche Goodno and Mrs Minnie Ersley went to Hornell. While, Mrs RH Murdock, Miss Ella Knapp, Mrs JE Armstrong, Mrs Mary T Young and Mrs Mary Streeter went to Rochester.

October:

Greenwood's Postmaster, Jerry Burd attended the national convention of the Dads of Vets of Foreign Wars in Bradford, PA.

Mrs Robert Cheesman, associate matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, was elected delegate for the Grand Chapter meeting in New York City.

Some scouting news. Boy Scout Troop 62 held a Court of Honor lead by scoutmaster Reed Lowery and assisted by Wayne Warriner. New officers were installed: Robert Alderfer, assistant scoutmaster; Richard Updyke, senior patrol leader; Roger Smith, Robert Streeter and John Murray, patrol leaders; and Jerry Dennis and Lynn Vanderhoef, assistants. Wayne Warriner was installed as scribe. Many merit badges were awarded. Perry (streeter), Robert Streeter was awarded 1st Class and my dad, John Murray earned a First Aid merit badge which came in handy later with his seven kids.

Also important to know, the dedicated faculty at GCS, Mrs June Rollins, Mrs Joanne Holt and Donald Newell attended a course at Alfred University. While, Mrs Virginia Mullen and Mrs Inez Sutton attended a class in Bath at the Geneseo State Teachers College. Also, a large group attended the Southern Tier Study Council at Alfred.

November:

Walter Redmond was back at it. He spoke for adult education at Canisteo Central School. Mrs JH Goodno, Mrs Edward Anderson and Mrs Daniel Redmond attended.

The Boy Scouts, along with their guests, had a hayride. Tractors were driven by Wayne Warriner and Gary Reimann.

An open house at GCS for American Education Week included a special music program directed by June Rollins with children from Kindergarten through eighth grade doing dances to demonstrate how children can express themselves and develop their social lives thought music and dance. Dances included a folk dance to Hansel and Gretel by the Kindergarteners, a German folk dance by the 1st graders and many more.

And, another children's party; reported in November; but, it may actually have been on Halloween in October. Mrs Carl Lamphier entertained 15 friends of her children for a Halloween party. "Games were played and refreshments served." Mrs Richard Fish assisted the hostess.

Fall is my favorite time of year and especially in rural New York with all the beautiful foliage. As I shared before, I visited in October and Perry Streeter was nice enough to give us a guide drive to see some of the beautiful leaves after church at St Mary's in Rexville. We had already had the privilege of roaming Greenwood Hill and taking the back way into Canisteo on our way to Hornell, so we got the full experience.

What has been your favorite fall experience in Greenwood?
