Christmas 1964

The town of Greenwood was in full swing with holiday events and sharing with others. What were you doing to celebrate?

The Greenwood Grange met at the IOOF Hall for their Christmas program and gift exchange planned by Kathryn Krusen, lecturer.

The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints held a Christmas meeting of the Women's Division to pack boxes for shut-ins and sick children. The Zion League and Church School presented their program at the Sunday service followed by a gift exchange.

Pam Holt here. The Methodist Church met and packed Christmas boxes for the hospital and nursing home along with a program of Christmas selections by six members. And, the Juniors of the Methodist Church had a Christmas party for 35 children with the help of Gail Tennant, Marcia Gratto, Starla Jackson and of course me. What fun we had!

Larry Wallace AKA Santa here. I made an appearance at a party at the Legion, hosted by the auxilliary, to give out gifts to 30 children. Does anyone remember me in that old red suit?

While the churches and other organizations throughout town were busy, so were those at Greenwood Central School. Windows were decorated with candles made by the art teacher, Robert Henshaw and the Honor Society decorated the front door. Ernest Dungan and his sixth grade class decorated the upstairs bulletin board with the 12 Days of Christmas.

June Rollins here. 1964 was the year I worked with the sixth grade to put on The Frog Prince, an operetta. Margorie Herrick made the costumes. Pamela Holt was the Princess; Ann McCormick, the queen; Steve Hunt, the King; and Tom York, in the starring role as the Frog Prince. Many of my other students were members of the choir. If you students are out there, tell us what you remember about this production.

There was lots of singing, which of course as a music teacher, I enjoy. The Future Homemakers of America chapter at GCS went caroling and handed out boxes with goodies and toys to families.

And, there were more dinners and visits than can be shared here throughout the holidays.

If you have a special memory from the Christmas of 1964, place it in the Facebook comments.
