Greenwood 1910

Updated: Jun 7, 2023

I am going to skip 1909 for the most part. But, will mention that in the summer, the Wallace family held a reunion at the home of Jarvis Wallace and the Pease Young families had one too at the home of Floyd Pease.

And, that there was a piano dance at the Opera House in honor of Miss G Cheeseman. Who knows what a piano dance is? I can venture to guess it was a dance accompanied by just a piano; but, if you know more, add it in the Facebook Comments for everyone to read.

Let's get started with the happenings in Greenwood during 1910...

At the Greenwood Union Free School, Regents Exams in Spelling, Geography, Arithmetic, Elementary English, First Year English, Elementary US History and Civics, Botany and Physics where completed.

On a brighter note, the juniors and seniors of Greenwood Union School hosted a Comet Party at 2 AM. There was a heavy rain. But, "two students woke up everyone and they proceeded to Christian Hollow to yell and wake up Principal and Mrs. Wilcox, turned out the street lights and continued to the home of Miss Charlotte Hauber where food was served along with music and merriment." With all of this going on, they "forgot to look for the comet!"

The Great January Comet of 1910, formally designated C/1910 A1 and often referred to as the Daylight Comet, was a comet which appeared in January 1910. ... At its brightest, it outshone the planet Venus, and was possibly the brightest comet of the 20th century. For more information, see

Since I just mentioned the Opera House; let's share some news. The Opera House was managed by the Greenwood Improvement Company. With the following serving on its board:

President - TM Blair

VPs - B O'Hargan, Mary Webster, John D Rogers and Gordon Pease

Secretaries - EW Plaisted, BL Goff and WO Slocum.

They announced that "business was good with a balance at year end."

And, because I mentioned Anna C Etz yesterday, Greenwood had the Anna C Etz League which was a group of prominent men in Greenwood who were in favor of equal rights.

Another organization, the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU)'s Medical Temperance Department chose a supervisor, Ettie Williamson.

The First National Bank voted to reduce its director count from 15 to 9 with the following elections" M Shaw (cashier), AP Woodward (President), WO Slocum, Jerome White, J Monroe Cheeseman (VP), Terrance O'Hargan, Al Lewis, William Rollins and GM Woodward.

They also declared steady growth and their usual semi-annual 3% dividend in January.

It was announced that the Greenwood Cheese Factory would not open in the spring. All winter farmers had been transporting to Canisteo and a few to Rexville; but, this was deemed not profitable and summer product just cannot be transported that far. "Local farmers are wondering what they will do?"

Spring potato prices drop $.05 per bushel to $.20. Last spring prices were $.75 to $1.00 per bushel. One third of crop remain unsold; many farmers saved theirs and did not sell in the fall expecting increased prices in spring due to the freeze over the winter. They should have.

"William Rogers, oil driller from Andover, reconnoitering in Greenwood." This news reporter must love big words, it just means he was surveying, checking out locations.

There was a Telephone meeting and appointed Mrs Floyd Burkhart operator to replace Lena Cheeseman. Mrs Burkhart will rent the Cheeseman's house; so, there will be no move of the location of the central office needed.

Burr Williamson resigned as RR Mail Carrier for Rt 1. "Dale Baker, next on the list will probably get the route." Wes White will temporarily carry the mail.

Just because they have a relationship to the author, I will mention a couple of the town visits noted. Constable Flay Pease was in town and Bernard Murray and his son Thomas were too.

"House cleaning has been begun in our village already by quite a number of our thirfty better halves." How about that one?

An interesting advertisement gave me a chuckle. At Coston's, you can get seed corn, and patent leather pumps for $2.50.
